Coach’s Corner

Good Day and thank you for dropping by our site!

The recruiting season is in full swing for all NCAA and MCLA coaches.  This is a very huge part of the “job” for every coach across America.  I just never thought I would see the day when I would actually be “recruiting” from an in-state feeder program like the one Texas has developed.  Back in the 80’s the question was “Do you want to hit someone as hard as you do in football but with less padding and a stick?”  Today, it’s “How many years have you been playing?  What were your stats on Varsity?  How are your grades?  Why do you want to attend college?”  The talent through out the state, in all divisions, is fantastic!

To help in the recruiting process, I am both excited and very proud to announce the formation of the “Sam Houston Men’s Lacrosse Scholarship” fund!  This is due to the generous donations of our alumni!  With this we can now go after some of the best talent in the state… and in the country!  As with any financial program the competition for these funds is very competitive.  I am dedicated to bringing quick change to the program and with that comes a change in talent.  My original goal of returning to Division I of the MCLA was 2012.  From what I am seeing talent wise in Texas and outside of the state, we may return a year ahead of time in 2011!

For those recruits out there, your parents or coaches, please contact me directly through the “Recruit” tab with any questions.  My goal is to help you, the STUDENT/Athlete, acheive education success as well as athletic.

Yours in lacrosse,

Coach Fritts

Sam Houston Dropped by KSU 15-7

The #17 ranked Kennesaw State Owls came to Pritchett Field Monday night to face #23 Sam Houston in a game closely watched by many through out the nation.  Could Sam Houston live up to all the national attention?  They did… but they didn’t.

Bearkats jumped out to an early 1-0 just 51 seconds in to the game on a goal by Nick Williams assisted by Zach Fry. In a span of just a minute and a half, the Owls rattled off three of their own.  Sam Houston answered with two goals by Wil Nielsen and Fry to end the 1st quarter tied at 3.  Donny Myer and Logan Holmes assisted on Nielsen and Fry’s goals respectively.

In the 2nd and 3rd quarters, the Owls just turned up the heat a few notches and Sam Houston just didn’t keep pace.  KSU outscored Sam 4-1 in the second quarter and 5-2 in the 3rd.  Logan Holmes scored on an assist from Donny Meyer in the 2nd while in the 3rd Brendan Gawronski hit in the on an assist from Nielsen and Williams scored again unassisted.  Alex Badour scored the lone goal in the 4th to KSU’s 3 goals.

After the game, Coach Fritts said “We played a good, fast and deep Kennesaw team tonight.  They were able to find the open man and finish the play.  We missed about 4 or 5 one on one’s with their goalie which can just kill you.”  Besides those missed opportunities, Sam Houston controlled the face off winning 16 of 24.  Donny Meyer was 7-11; Austin Atwood 8-11 and Zach Fry was 1-2.  “We had the ball, we had the opportunities and just did not take advantage of those situations.”

Sam Houston is in action again tomorrow night (Wednesday, March 10) when the Rice Owls come to Pritchett Field for a 7pm game.

KATS Stay Undefeated! Big Test This Monday Night!

Sam Houston downed the visiting “Roos” from Austin College on Saturday (3/6) by a score of 24-0.

True test for the Kats will be this Monday (3/8) when 17th ranked Kennesaw State comes to faceoff with the #22 Bearkats.  Coach Fritts said “This game has been planned for many months and Coach Byers (KSU Head Coach) and I look forward to a great game.”  Both Fritts and Byers are from Long Island so this might mean some… “bragging rights?!”  “Coach Byers will have his boys ready, trust me.  They’ll be in shape, they’ll have a great amount of finesse and by all means, they’ll hit you when they need to… just as we do.  It will be good old fashion ‘Long Island’ ball all night long.”

The two coaches have never met before as all communication has been done via phone and email.  “This is going to be fun. He (Byers) is a class act and I know we both look forward to being able to put a face with a name.”

Monday night’s match up will be the most important game in the history of Sam Houston lacrosse. Fritts says “This game will either catapult us forward on the national scene and get us some respect or we’ll drop like a hot potato.”

Game time is 6:30pm.  Be there… support your KATS… and wear your ORANGE!!!
